Introduction to Pilates for People with Spinal Fusions

Focus Exercise Video SF: Bridging

This video is one of the focus exercises for the week.  Try to repeat it 2-3 times before our next class together.

The benefits of bridging for people with spinal fusions are plentiful:
⭐ Core stabilization
⭐ Strengthens the glutes
⭐ Opens the fronts of the hip
⭐ Starts to teach hip extension

And all of this in neutral spine, neutral pelvis! Sometimes bridging is taught as a spinal articulation exercise where the practitioner rolls up and down through each vertebra. The primary modification for people with spinal fusions is to imagine that the pelvis lifts straight up towards the ceiling (like a helicopter taking off) and then returns straight down towards the floor while the spine maintains axial elongation. This modification maintains the spine and pelvis in a neutral position.

Inspiring health and happiness!
