Introduction to Pilates for People with Spinal Fusions

Focus Exercise Video SF: Focus on Hip Hinging

This video is one of the focus exercises for the week.  Try to repeat it 2-3 times before our next class together.

Hip hinging is one of the most important movement patterns for people with spinal fusions to practice. Creasing at the hips helps keep the spine in neutral so that we’re not placing additional stress on the unfused vertebra and surrounding soft tissues. Hip hinging is very functional for when we brush our teeth, wash our face, or load the dishwasher.

Tips and tricks:
⭐ You can use an actual dowel or your imagination.
⭐ If your spine rounds towards the back body in the mid and upper back (hyper kyphosis), your head will not touch the dowel. Try to keep the dowel connected at your mid back and sacrum.
